Massive fire destroys dozens of fishing boats at Ecuador’s Manta port
A major fire tore through a section of Ecuador’s busiest Pacific fishing port, destroying dozens of vessels and injuring two people, authorities said on Saturday.
The blaze erupted at the port of Manta in Manabí province, a vital hub for Ecuador’s fishing industry. Emergency crews battled the flames for hours before bringing the fire under control, according to the National Secretariat for Risk Management.
Preliminary assessments indicate that at least 35 fishing boats were destroyed while moored at the port. Most of the affected vessels were small and medium-sized boats constructed from highly flammable materials, including fiberglass, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Two people sustained injuries during the incident, though authorities have not yet released details regarding the severity of their conditions.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. According to the local fire department, witnesses reported that welding work was being carried out on one of the boats shortly before the blaze broke out. Investigators are examining whether the maintenance activity may have played a role in igniting the fire.
Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed towering flames engulfing multiple vessels and thick plumes of black smoke rising above the harbor, creating a striking scene visible from across the coastal city.
Firefighters, emergency personnel, and port authorities worked throughout the operation to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to additional vessels and nearby port infrastructure.
Officials said a formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess the full extent of the damage.
The destruction of dozens of fishing boats is expected to have a significant impact on local fishermen and businesses that depend on Manta’s maritime economy. The port serves as one of Ecuador’s most important fishing centers and plays a key role in the country's seafood exports.
Authorities are continuing damage assessments while coordinating assistance for those affected by the fire. (ILKHA)
