The Mayor of Paris said that the lights on the Eiffel Tower would be switched off at 11.45 p.m. from this week onwards, in a bid to save electricity due to the energy crisis
“The City of Light will remain the City of Light. It is important to show that everywhere, including this monument... which we symbolically light up in green when there are important moments for the climate, will also participate,” said the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, during a presentation of the energy sobriety plan of Paris.
An earlier switch-off time for the lights on the Eiffel Tower, which was built by engineer Gustave Eiffel 133 years ago, will lead to energy savings of 4 percent, she added.
French energy sobriety plan calls for a mobilization of everyone to achieve substantial overall energy savings. It caps a range of plans and circulars that originated in early 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine and subsequent constraints on the European energy supply.
The broader French energy strategy, announced by French President Emmanuel Macron in February 2022, is based on four pillars: energy sobriety, energy efficiency, accelerating the development of renewable energies (EnR), and the revival of the French nuclear industry. (ILKHA)
