Istanbul bans fireworks, incendiary materials to combat extreme wildfire risk

Istanbul authorities have imposed a citywide ban on fireworks, signal flares, torches, and other incendiary items from July 29 to October 28, citing heightened wildfire risks amid soaring summer temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, the Istanbul Governor’s Office announced Tuesday.
The measure expands on a June restriction prohibiting public access to forested areas from June 23 to October 15 to prevent fire outbreaks. Police, gendarmerie, and other units will enforce the ban, with legal consequences for violators.
Officials emphasized that fireworks pose a significant fire hazard, as sparks can ignite dry vegetation, leading to rapid-spreading blazes. In urban settings, illegal or improper firework use risks rooftop fires, electrical damage, and injuries, while also contributing to air and noise pollution harmful to wildlife and public health.
The ban coincides with Türkiye’s severe wildfire season, with multiple blazes reported in western and southern provinces this July. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any fire signs to emergency services promptly.
The combined restrictions aim to safeguard Istanbul’s natural and urban areas from devastating wildfires during the peak heat months. (ILKHA)
