The sacred Night of Forgiveness, known as Laylat al-Baraat, was solemnly observed at Süleymaniye Mosque with a significant gathering of worshippers.

The event, which marks the transition from the 14th to the 15th of Sha'ban, was attended by notable figures including Istanbul Governor Davut Gül and Istanbul Mufti Prof. Dr. Safi Arpaguş.

The night commenced with the recitation of the Qur'an by numerous teachers, followed by the performance of Mawlid-i Sharif and qasida. The atmosphere was one of spiritual reflection and communal prayer, aimed at heralding the approach of Ramadan.

In his address, Prof. Dr. Safi Arpaguş elucidated the significance of the Night of Forgiveness, explaining, "Barat signifies the liberation from obligations. It is believed that on this night, Allah Almighty forgives the sins of the believers. This night is particularly special as it is thought that the Holy Qur'an was initially revealed to the world, later fully manifested during Laylat al-Qadr. Hence, it's also known as the night of mercy."

Arpaguş further highlighted prophetic traditions, quoting the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), who stated: "Allah manifests in the sky of the world during the middle of Sha'ban, forgiving countless believers and sinners." He emphasized that the Prophet himself would spend this night in prayer and the following day in fasting, encouraging the community to follow this practice.

The Mufti also addressed the conditions for forgiveness, noting that while the observance of this night could lead to absolution, those who engage in polytheism, harbor envy, or show disrespect to parents might not benefit from this forgiveness. He urged the congregation to embrace compassion and mercy towards all, particularly towards parents, neighbors, and the broader community, to truly benefit from the night's spiritual offerings.

The event concluded with a collective prayer, leaving attendees with a sense of renewal and hope for forgiveness and blessings in the forthcoming Ramadan.

This gathering not only underscored the spiritual significance of Laylat al-Baraat but also reinforced the communal bonds through shared religious observance in one of Istanbul's historic mosques. (ILKHA)
