Türkiye recovers 36.1 million tonnes of paper waste under Zero Waste Project
Türkiye has recovered 36.1 million tonnes of paper waste through its Zero Waste Project between 2017 and 2025, preventing the felling of an estimated 613 million trees, according to project officials.
In a statement, the Zero Waste Project said the initiative continues to promote sustainable production and consumption practices aimed at improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Officials noted that paper recycling efforts carried out under the project have contributed significantly to the conservation of natural resources and the reduction of waste sent to landfills.
According to the figures released, the recovery of 36.1 million tonnes of paper waste over the eight-year period helped prevent the cutting of approximately 613 million trees. The project said this amount corresponds to nearly seven percent of Türkiye's forest assets.
Launched to encourage recycling, waste reduction and environmental awareness, the Zero Waste Project has become one of Türkiye's flagship sustainability initiatives and has been highlighted among international efforts addressing climate and environmental challenges.
The initiative seeks to support a circular economy model by increasing the recovery and reuse of recyclable materials while reducing pressure on natural resources.
Authorities also called on citizens to continue separating waste at the source and actively participate in recycling efforts, stressing that public involvement remains essential to achieving long-term environmental sustainability goals.
The project forms part of Türkiye's broader environmental agenda, which aims to improve waste management practices, strengthen resource conservation and contribute to global sustainability objectives.(ILKHA)
