Ankara urges international community to hold Israel accountable for war crimes

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on Friday for urgent international action to halt what he described as “genocide” in Gaza and to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity.
Speaking at a high-level conference hosted by the Rome-based Institute of International Affairs (IAI), Fidan declared that the unfolding tragedy in Gaza is “the real test” for the international community to separate right from wrong.
“Israel is committing genocide in Gaza,” he stated unequivocally. “Recognizing this reality and exposing Israel’s crimes against humanity are the first steps toward building a fairer and more just world.”
Fidan urged all nations of conscience — and especially Italy — to take a principled stance against Israel’s ongoing aggression. “Italy’s support will be crucial in this global fight for justice and humanity,” he stressed, calling for collective pressure to end the siege, halt the massacres, and deliver relief to Gaza’s besieged population.
The Turkish foreign minister framed Gaza not only as a humanitarian crisis but as a defining moral challenge of the era, warning that silence in the face of Israel’s crimes would embolden further oppression.
Beyond Gaza, Fidan’s remarks also touched on Türkiye’s strategic ties with Italy as NATO allies and G20 partners. He emphasized the shared responsibility of both countries to stabilize the Mediterranean and Africa, deepen cooperation in defense, energy, and trade, and push for reforms in global governance systems that would give a stronger voice to oppressed nations.
He praised Italy’s continued backing of Türkiye’s bid for EU membership, stressing that Türkiye’s inclusion would strengthen Europe’s security and moral standing. He called for joint leadership with Italy in addressing migration issues, investing in African development, and confronting root causes of instability — all while ensuring that the plight of Gaza remains at the top of the global agenda.
Looking ahead to the upcoming UN General Assembly’s high-level week, Fidan vowed that Gaza will remain Türkiye’s foremost priority. “We are rallying all countries of conscience to the side of humanity,” he said. “The world must confront Israel’s crimes and demand an end to the genocide.”
His remarks underscored Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause and its determination to mobilize global action for justice, accountability, and the liberation of Gaza from oppression. (ILKHA)
