A massive explosion tore through a chemical factory in Thane's Dombivali near Mumbai on Thursday, triggering a large fire and raising fears that people are still trapped inside.
At least nine people have been confirmed dead and over 60 injured in the blast, according to officials.
The explosion, believed to be caused by a boiler malfunction, formed a large crater at the factory and sent shockwaves that damaged nearby buildings, shattered windows, and even bent heavy metal beams.
Rescue teams are using drones to locate possible survivors trapped in the debris. Firefighters are battling the blaze, which has spread to nearby structures, and officials estimate it could take hours to extinguish completely.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered the closure of high-risk industrial units and a review of safety standards. He also announced compensation for the families of the victims and pledged to cover medical expenses for the injured.
The explosion's impact shattered windows in nearby houses and caused damage to vehicles. (ILKHA)
