An informal meeting of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held in Russia’s Leningrad Oblast, bringing together Presidents from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the year's focus under Russia's CIS presidency, stating: "In 2024, our main efforts were aimed at developing integration in the Eurasian space, strengthening the international authority of the Commonwealth, and ensuring the effective operation of its executive bodies." He emphasized priorities like deepening economic cooperation, facilitating the free movement of goods and services, removing trade barriers, and simplifying customs procedures.

Putin expressed optimism about the ongoing collaboration, noting: "The CIS countries will continue to work on solving the problems of social and economic development, strengthening stability and security."

The summit wasn't all business; the leaders also enjoyed cultural activities, including a visit to an auto club and auto museum where they witnessed an ice show. This informal setting allowed for open discussions on current international and regional issues among the leaders.

Looking ahead, Tajikistan is set to assume the CIS presidency starting January 1, 2025, promising to carry forward the momentum of integration and cooperation within the region. (ILKHA)
