Germany saw an unprecedented increase in right-wing extremist crimes throughout 2024, with local media reporting a significant spike in these offenses.
According to the RND media group, by November 30, 2024, the police had documented 33,963 politically motivated crimes associated with right-wing ideology. This revelation came from a response by the Interior Ministry to an inquiry by the parliamentary group of The Left party.
The final tally, expected to be published by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in May, is projected to be even higher, accounting for additional crimes that occurred in December. In comparison, 2023 saw 28,945 such crimes recorded by the BKA, marking a rise of at least 17.34% in 2024.
The breakdown of these crimes shows that 1,136 were violent incidents, while the bulk consisted of propaganda offenses (21,311), sedition (5,097), and property damage (1,942).
The surge in right-wing extremist activities is seen against a backdrop of increasing racism and xenophobia in Germany, exacerbated by the political rhetoric and activities of far-right movements and parties, notably the Alternative for Germany (AfD). This party has capitalized on public anxieties related to the refugee crisis, contributing to a divisive political atmosphere.
This development raises concerns about the growing influence of right-wing extremism in Germany and underscores the challenges facing the country in combating hate crimes and maintaining social cohesion. (ILKHA)
