Greece has officially approved a deal to purchase 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the United States as part of a major military modernization effort.
The acquisition, valued at approximately $3.5 billion, is aimed at bolstering the country's defense capabilities.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized that the F-35s will serve as a powerful deterrent in the region. Deliveries of the advanced fighter jets are expected to commence in 2028, with an option for Greece to purchase an additional 20 aircraft.
This move comes amid ongoing tensions with neighboring Turkey, including disputes over maritime boundaries. Greece has also recently acquired French-made Rafale fighter jets as part of its military overhaul.
The United States approved the potential sale of up to 40 F-35 aircraft to Greece earlier this year. The deal includes engines, support equipment, and training. (ILKHA)
