Hamas gives mediators full authority to choose members of Gaza governing committee
Senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya, head of the group’s political bureau, said mediators have been given full freedom to select members of a new administrative committee that will govern the Gaza Strip, affirming that the body will have complete authority over the territory.
In an interview aired Sunday evening on Al Jazeera, Hayya stated that Hamas had agreed to allow mediators to determine the composition of the governing committee as part of ongoing political consultations aimed at establishing a post-war administration in Gaza.
He stressed that certain issues concerning Palestinian national priorities cannot be decided by any single faction, emphasizing that such matters “concern the entire Palestinian political spectrum.”
According to Hayya, Hamas has conducted multiple rounds of dialogue with various Palestinian factions, including Fatah, and said that the understandings reached with these groups were “almost identical” to those agreed upon with Fatah.
Hayya cited the recent Hamas statement that confirmed “the formation of an administrative committee, currently being coordinated by mediators, to assume governance responsibilities in Gaza.”
He revealed that Hamas had approved a list of names proposed by the Egyptian mediators, noting that around four months ago, the movement submitted a list of over 40 Palestinian national figures without political affiliations to Egypt, asking mediators to choose candidates they considered suitable.
The Hamas leader also said that all Palestinian factions had agreed to establish an international body to oversee reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
“This body will be responsible for securing funding and supervising the rebuilding process,” Hayya explained.
The remarks come amid ongoing efforts by regional mediators, particularly Egypt and Qatar, to broker agreements on Gaza’s political and humanitarian future following months of war and devastation in the enclave. (ILKHA)
