Hamas has announced the names of three Israeli captives - Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami, and Or Levy - who are scheduled for release from Gaza on Saturday.
This marks the fifth exchange under the current truce which began on January 19, 2025, after over 15 months of devastating Israeli military actions in Gaza.
In return, Israel has committed to freeing 183 Palestinian prisoners, a gesture that brings hope and relief to many Palestinian families. Among those to be released are 111 individuals from Gaza, arrested in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 incidents, including 18 who have been sentenced to life and 54 others serving long terms. This exchange symbolizes a step towards justice for those who have endured long periods of incarceration.
The ceasefire has been a much-needed respite for the residents of Gaza, where the prolonged conflict has resulted in the tragic loss of over 47,000 lives and the displacement of the vast majority of the population. The devastation brought by the Israeli war has left the enclave in ruins, highlighting the urgent need for peace and reconstruction.
To date, this three-phase agreement has facilitated the release of 18 captives from Gaza, including 13 Israelis and 5 Thai nationals, in exchange for 583 Palestinian prisoners. With this upcoming swap, the total number of Palestinian prisoners to be freed will rise to 766, showcasing a commitment to addressing some of the injustices committed during the conflict.
However, the road to peace remains fraught with challenges as more than 70 captives are still held in Gaza. This exchange not only brings families together but also underscores the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights and freedom.
The international community continues to watch closely, hoping this ceasefire could pave the way for a more lasting peace, addressing the underlying issues of occupation, blockade, and the right of return for Palestinians. (ILKHA)
