The Iranian Foreign Ministry has vehemently condemned Canada's decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani described the move as politically motivated, provocative, and irrational.
Kanaani criticized Canada's decision as a hostile act contrary to international norms and principles that prevent interference in other nations' internal affairs. "Canada’s unwise decision is a hostile act and contrary to international norms and principles which prevent interference in other governments’ internal affairs," IRNA quoted Kanaani as saying on Thursday.
He accused the Canadian government of being influenced by warmongers, human rights violators, and supporters of terrorism. Kanaani reiterated that the IRGC is a state entity actively involved in combating terrorism and ensuring national security, as well as fostering regional peace and stability.
In his remarks, Kanaani described Canada's actions as "disgusting" and asserted that they would not deter the Islamic Republic from strengthening its legal deterrent power and expanding its authority. He warned that Iran reserves the right to respond reciprocally to what it views as a violation of international law and the rights of the Iranian nation and government.
The Canadian federal government announced its decision to place the IRGC on its list of terrorist organizations, as reported by the Globe and Mail newspaper. This follows a unanimous motion passed by the Canadian House of Commons in May to designate the IRGC, a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, as a terrorist group. (ILKHA)
