Israeli forces close Ibrahimi Mosque to Palestinians during Jewish holidays

Israeli occupation forces closed the Ibrahimi Mosque to Palestinian worshipers on Wednesday until Thursday evening, citing the need to secure Jewish holiday celebrations.
The closure sparked condemnation from Palestinian authorities and residents, who described it as a blatant violation of religious rights and an act of provocation against Muslims.
Amjad Karajeh, Director of the Hebron Endowments Department, denounced the closure, stating it desecrates the sanctity of the mosque and infringes on Palestinians’ right to access their place of worship. “Closing the mosque under the pretext of settlers’ celebrations is a provocative assault on our religious and human rights,” Karajeh said.
Occupation forces also reinforced checkpoints and electronic gates around the mosque, restricting movement for Palestinians while facilitating settler access. Markets in the Old City of Hebron were closed, and curfews were imposed on the Jaber, Salaymeh, Ghaith, and Wadi al-Hussein neighborhoods near the Kiryat Arba settlement.
The curfew, now in effect for the third consecutive day, has prevented students from reaching schools and tightened restrictions in neighborhoods including Tel Rumeida, Shuhada Street, and Jabal al-Rahma. Local residents described the situation as a recurring nightmare, particularly during Jewish holidays, when sieges, military restrictions, and settler incursions intensify.
The Kiryat Arba settlement, built on Palestinian land east of Hebron, continues to expand, with occupation forces prioritizing settler security over the rights of Palestinians. The closure of the Ibrahimi Mosque and the imposition of curfews highlight the systematic restrictions imposed on Palestinian residents, restricting access to worship, education, and daily life.
Local activists warn that such measures are part of a broader campaign to assert Israeli control over Hebron, especially the Old City, which is home to both Palestinians and significant religious sites. They called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for violations of religious freedom and international law.
“The Jewish holidays bring fear and restrictions for the citizens of Hebron,” Karajeh said, “as the occupation intensifies its violations, closes our streets, and obstructs our daily lives. Our people remain steadfast in the face of these oppressive measures.” (ILKHA)
