Poland begins construction of second barrier on Belarus border
Polish authorities have started work on a second border barrier along the country’s frontier with Belarus, according to reports from Polish media.
The new structure is being built in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, an area that has seen heightened border tensions and increased migration pressure in recent years.
Officials said installation of the fence is set to begin in the coming days, with the project scheduled for completion by January. The new barrier will feature a four-meter-high metal mesh wall, reinforced with barbed wire along its base to prevent crossings.
The move follows earlier efforts to secure the border. In 2022, Poland constructed a 5.5-meter-high metal wall spanning approximately 180 kilometers. That barrier was equipped with barbed wire, motion sensors, and all-weather surveillance cameras along its full length. Additional modernization work was carried out in 2024 to strengthen the structure and improve monitoring capabilities.
The new fence is intended to complement the existing system and further restrict unauthorized border crossings amid ongoing political and security concerns between Warsaw and Minsk. Authorities have not yet provided cost details or clarified whether additional electronic surveillance systems will be added to the new structure. (ILKHA)
