A series of minor earthquakes has been shaking the Greek Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, with tremors felt in Santorini, Amorgos, and the surrounding areas.
These seismic activities have sparked concerns about the potential re-awakening of the Santorini volcano, although seismologists assert there is no direct connection between the quakes and volcanic activity.
The most recent earthquake struck at 15:29 local time off the coast of Amorgos, registering a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale. This followed another quake at 14:49, with a magnitude of 4.1. Earlier in the day, at 12:16, the Geodynamic Institute of Athens recorded a tremor of 3.9 on the Richter scale, located 25 km north-northwest of Anafi at a depth of 15 km.
The region has been experiencing intense aftershock activity, with numerous weak tremors ranging between 2-3 on the Richter scale. Notably, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake was also recorded 18 km south-southeast of Arkesini, Amorgos.
Despite the seismic activity, experts from the Geodynamic Institute of Athens have stated that there is currently no evidence linking these earthquakes to volcanic activity from Santorini's caldera. The area is known for its complex tectonic interactions, which often result in such clusters of minor seismic events.
Residents and visitors in the affected areas have been advised to stay informed through official channels and follow any emergency guidelines issued by local authorities. (ILKHA)
