Syrian Interior Ministry confirms tribal fighters evacuated from Sweida

The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that tribal fighters have been evacuated from the southern city of Sweida, bringing a halt to the recent wave of violent clashes that had gripped the area.
In an official statement posted on Telegram, ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba confirmed that following the implementation of a ceasefire agreement, government forces were deployed to key sectors of the city, leading to the stabilization of the situation.
“After intensive efforts by the Ministry of Interior to implement the ceasefire agreement, following the deployment of its forces in the northern and western regions of Sweida Governorate, the city of Sweida was evacuated of all tribal fighters, and clashes within the city's neighborhoods were halted,” al-Baba stated.
The announcement marks a significant de-escalation after days of tensions and intermittent fighting between security forces and armed tribal groups in and around Sweida, a region known for its predominantly Druze population and long history of localized autonomy.
Although the Interior Ministry did not specify the terms of the ceasefire or the number of fighters evacuated, the move appears to reflect ongoing efforts by the Syrian government to restore state control and calm unrest in southern Syria, where tribal dynamics, economic grievances, and local militias continue to influence the security landscape.
Observers say the situation in Sweida remains fragile, with potential for renewed tensions if underlying political and social demands are not addressed.
No casualties were officially reported following the ceasefire, and the Ministry has urged all parties to respect the agreement and avoid further escalation. (ILKHA)
