Three people lost their lives on Sunday morning while attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat.
The tragedy occurred off the coast of Sangatte, near Calais, at approximately 06:00 local time (05:00 GMT), when individuals fell into the water during the boarding process.
Meanwhile, 45 survivors were treated on the beach, with many suffering from hypothermia. Seven individuals required intensive care, and four were transported to a hospital for further treatment.
The French coastguard has launched a search operation to locate any additional survivors. The Home Office confirmed the incident occurred in French waters, with French authorities leading the investigation.
This year has been the deadliest on record for Channel crossings. Over 36,000 people have made the perilous journey so far, surpassing last year’s total of 29,437. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 77 people have died attempting the crossing in 2024.
The tragedy follows a particularly busy period for Channel crossings, with 1,485 people making the journey over the past four days, marking the busiest Christmas season for crossings since records began in 2018.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities and migrants as the English Channel remains a focal point of perilous journeys and humanitarian crises. (ILKHA)
