Trump declares all Biden autopen-signed orders “terminated”
The U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that any document signed by former President Joe Biden using an autopen “is hereby terminated,” escalating his long-running attacks on Biden’s use of the mechanical signature device.
Posting on his social media platform, Trump claimed: “I am hereby cancelling all Executive Orders, and anything else that was not directly signed by Crooked Joe Biden.” He did not specify which executive orders or directives he believes fall under this declaration.
Trump further alleged that individuals who operated the autopen “did so illegally,” despite long-standing Justice Department guidance confirming that presidents may lawfully use an autopen to sign bills into law and execute other official documents. The practice has been used by multiple administrations of both parties.
The president has repeatedly fixated on Biden’s use of the autopen. In June, Trump accused Biden aides of using the device to impose “radical” policies and subsequently ordered an investigation into Biden’s mental state during his presidency. Biden dismissed that probe at the time, calling it “nothing more than a mere distraction.”
“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false,” Biden told ABC News in a June statement.
Trump has acknowledged using an autopen himself for routine or ceremonial purposes, but has criticized its use for matters such as pardons, which he argues require a direct personal signature.
Legal experts note that Trump’s declaration has no clear statutory authority and would likely face immediate challenges if implemented. Nonetheless, his latest comments highlight an intensifying political feud over presidential authority, legitimacy, and the mechanics of executive governance. (ILKHA)
