Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan joined a high-level meeting on Syria in Riyadh, attended by foreign ministers and officials from across the Arab League and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.
The gathering included representatives from Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. Arab League Chief Ahmed Aboul-Gheit and GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi were also in attendance.
The meeting marks a significant regional discussion following major political changes in Syria. Bashar al-Assad, Syria's leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime forces took control of Damascus on December 8. The rapid fall of the Baath Party regime followed a lightning offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters, who captured key cities in less than two weeks.
A new administration, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, has since assumed control of the country, signaling a turning point in Syria's governance and regional relations.
Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan’s participation underscores Türkiye's continued engagement in the Syrian crisis and its broader role in regional diplomacy. The meeting aimed to address ongoing political and humanitarian challenges in Syria and explore pathways for stabilization and reconstruction in the war-torn nation. (ILKHA)
