Ukraine reportedly strikes major oil refinery in southern Russia
Ukrainian forces reportedly launched an overnight strike on one of southern Russia’s largest oil refineries on Nov. 29, according to multiple Russian Telegram channels.
Images and videos circulating on social media appear to show a massive fire engulfing the Afipsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar Krai.
The Kyiv Independent has not been able to immediately verify the footage, and Ukraine’s military has not yet issued a statement regarding the alleged attack. Details on the scale of the damage remain unclear.
The Afipsky Oil Refinery—located roughly 200 kilometers from the front line—has been a frequent target of Ukrainian long-range strikes due to its strategic role in fueling Russian military operations. The facility was struck earlier on Sept. 26 and twice in August, highlighting its vulnerability and importance in Russia’s wartime supply chain.
Processing around 6.25 million tons of oil annually, the refinery accounts for approximately 2.1% of Russia’s total refining capacity. It serves as a key logistics hub for diesel and aviation kerosene, supplying fuel essential for Russian ground and air operations.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on domestically produced long-range drones to carry out precision attacks deep inside Russian territory, particularly against energy infrastructure that supports Moscow’s military campaign. Kyiv has intensified this strategy in recent months, targeting oil depots, refineries, and gas facilities that contribute significantly to Russia’s war financing.
Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has previously stated that sustained strikes on Russia’s oil sector have caused serious disruptions to fuel logistics, complicating Moscow’s ability to maintain frontline operations.
If confirmed, the latest strike on the Afipsky refinery would mark yet another blow to Russia’s wartime energy network as Ukraine continues expanding the reach and frequency of its deep-penetration drone campaign. (ILKHA)
