The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, declared on Saturday that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip can proceed without the displacement of its Palestinian residents.
Rajagopal pointed out that recent Israeli military actions have resulted in the destruction of approximately 70% of Gaza's buildings. Despite this extensive damage, he estimates that roughly 70% of the area could be rebuilt over the next 5 to 10 years.
The cost of this massive reconstruction project is projected to reach around $60 billion. Rajagopal's statement underscores the feasibility of rebuilding efforts while ensuring that the local Palestinian population remains in their homes.
His remarks come amid calls for international support to rebuild Gaza while ensuring the protection and dignity of its Palestinian inhabitants. (ILKHA)
