The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) raised alarms on Thursday about the escalating environmental and health hazards in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement posted on social media, UNRWA reported that as of June 9th, more than 330,000 tons of waste have accumulated in or near populated areas throughout Gaza, posing severe risks to both the environment and public health. The agency highlighted the daily plight of children scavenging through trash amid the dire conditions.
"Unimpeded humanitarian access + #CeasefireNow are crucial to restore humane living conditions," UNRWA emphasized in its post.
The warning comes amidst ongoing conflict, with Israeli occupation forces conducting aggressive actions via land, sea, and air since October 7, 2023. The violence has resulted in devastating casualties, including the deaths of over 37,202 people and injuries to 84,932 others. Many more remain trapped under rubble, awaiting rescue and aid.
The situation in Gaza remains critical, with urgent calls for international intervention to address humanitarian needs and ensure the safety and well-being of civilians amidst the escalating crisis. (ILKHA)
