Afghanistan and Uzbekistan sign $2.5 billion in agreements to boost regional cooperation

In a major step towards regional economic cooperation, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan signed 35 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) valued at a total of $2.5 billion on Saturday.
The agreements, covering investment and trade in sectors like infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and manufacturing, are expected to significantly boost bilateral economic ties.
The signing ceremony was attended by high-level officials from both countries, including Afghan Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund and Uzbek Prime Minister Abdullah Aripov.
Baradar expressed optimism about the deals, stating they would create jobs and opportunities for both nations. The agreements come amidst Afghanistan's broader push to attract foreign investment and position itself as a regional trade hub. Uzbekistan, too, has been actively seeking to strengthen ties with its neighbor.
With a shared 144-kilometer border, the two countries have been steadily enhancing their cooperation in recent years. This latest development marks a significant milestone in their economic relationship. (ILKHA)
