Türkiye’s total final energy consumption in the industrial sector reached 1 million 717 thousand 368 terajoules in 2024, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Thursday.
The figures, based on the Survey on Final Energy Consumption in Industry, show that the “manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products” sector accounted for the largest share of industrial energy use, with 28.8% of the total. This was followed by the “manufacture of basic metals” sector at 22.7%, “manufacture of food products” at 10.9%, and “manufacture of textiles” at 7.4%.
Other key contributors included the “manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” sector with 6.2% and the construction sector with 4.8% of total industrial energy consumption.
In terms of energy sources, electricity was the most consumed type of energy in industry, accounting for 28.3% of total final consumption, equivalent to 485 thousand 163 terajoules. It was followed by natural gas with 23.6%, solid fossil fuels with 22.6%, and petroleum products with 14.0%.
Within the “manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products” sector — identified as the most energy-intensive sub-sector — petroleum products were the dominant energy source, representing 32.7% of that sector’s consumption. This was followed by solid fossil fuels (27.5%), natural gas (18.2%), and electricity (12.7%).
The data highlight the continued reliance of Türkiye’s industrial production on traditional fossil energy sources, while electricity remains the leading driver of industrial processes.
TurkStat’s report underscores the significance of energy efficiency and diversification policies as Türkiye aims to balance industrial growth with sustainable energy management. (ILKHA)
