The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced that 2,598,816 road motor vehicles were registered in Türkiye in 2024, reflecting a 13.5% increase compared to the previous year.
After accounting for 36,657 vehicles withdrawn from use, the net increase in registered vehicles was 2,562,159, highlighting the steady growth of the country’s transportation sector.
In December alone, 238,993 vehicles were registered, with cars making up 45.5% of the total, followed by motorcycles at 39.6% and small trucks at 9%. These figures also reflected a 26.5% increase in registrations compared to the previous month, showcasing notable growth across nearly all vehicle categories.
By the end of 2024, the total number of registered road motor vehicles in Türkiye had reached an impressive 31,301,389. Cars accounted for 51.9% of the total, motorcycles for 20%, and small trucks for 15%. Other vehicles included tractors (7.2%), trucks (3.2%), minibuses (1.7%), buses (0.7%), and special-purpose vehicles (0.3%).
Fuel preferences among registered cars revealed that 60.8% were gasoline-powered, followed by hybrid vehicles at 16.7%, diesel cars at 11.3%, and electric cars at 10.2%. This distribution indicates a gradual shift toward more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles. Engine sizes of registered cars showed that 33.1% had engines of 1300cc or smaller, while 22.3% were in the 1401-1500cc range, reflecting a preference for compact and economical models.
Grey emerged as the most popular car color, representing 38.5% of registered vehicles, followed by white at 26.2% and black at 13.1%. This trend underscores the enduring appeal of neutral and practical shades among car buyers.
The transfer of vehicles was also a significant activity in 2024, with 985,633 vehicles handed over in December alone. Cars dominated these transfers, making up 68.4% of the total, followed by small trucks at 15.5% and motorcycles at 7.3%.
The average age of registered vehicles in Türkiye was calculated to be 14.3 years, with motorcycles having the youngest fleet at an average age of 10.2 years, and tractors being the oldest at 24.5 years. For vehicles transferred in 2024, the average age was slightly younger at 12.2 years, reflecting the relatively newer condition of vehicles changing hands.
Overall, these developments highlight the dynamic nature of Türkiye’s transportation sector, with growing registrations, an increasing shift toward sustainable vehicles, and steady modernization of the nation’s vehicle fleet. (ILKHA)
