Türkiye has showcased progress in global education as revealed by the recently released Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 results.
Participating since 2003, Türkiye's performance in the latest assessment, conducted between April 19 and May 13, 2022, has been lauded in reports from both the Directorate of Measurement, Evaluation, and Exam Services and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The OECD's assessment acknowledged Türkiye as one of the few countries demonstrating improvement in various academic areas over the past decade. PISA 2022 maintained Türkiye's 2018 mathematics score, witnessed higher scores in science literacy, and saw a slight decrease in reading skills performance.
Key Points from PISA 2022 Results:
1. Global Ranking: Türkiye improved its global ranking in all three areas—mathematics, science, and reading skills. In mathematics, Türkiye moved from 42nd in 2018 to 39th out of 81 countries, securing the 32nd position among 37 OECD nations. Similarly, in science literacy, Türkiye climbed from 39th in 2018 to 34th globally and 29th among OECD countries. In reading skills, Türkiye progressed from 40th in 2018 to 36th globally and 30th among OECD nations.
2. Consistent Outperformance: Türkiye consistently outperformed the global average in mathematics and science, narrowing the gap with OECD countries. Positive outcomes were also noted in physical and social learning environments, reflecting Türkiye's efforts for equal opportunities and improved learning environments since 2003.
3. Mathematics Literacy: Over PISA cycles, focusing on mathematics literacy in 2022, Türkiye's performance steadily improved, scoring 453 and surpassing both the global and OECD averages. Türkiye reduced the gap with OECD countries from 70 to 19 points and with all countries from 41 to 15 points, gaining a lead of 15 points.
4. Science Literacy: Türkiye's science literacy average score of 476 exceeded both the OECD and global averages. The gap with OECD countries reduced from 68 to 9 points, and with all countries, it decreased from 40 to 29 points, putting Türkiye 29 points ahead.
5. Reading Skills: Despite a global decline in reading skills, Türkiye's average score of 456 surpassed both the global and OECD averages. Türkiye reduced the gap with OECD countries from 62 to 20 points and with all countries from 32 to 21 points in 2022.
Overall, Türkiye's performance in PISA 2022 reflects commendable progress, positioning the country favorably in global rankings across crucial academic disciplines. (ILKHA)
