Local officials have declared a dengue outbreak in Quezon City, following a significant surge in cases, with over 1,769 instances reported from January 1 to February 14, 2025.
This number represents a nearly 200% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (CESD).
The outbreak has led to at least ten deaths, with eight of the fatalities being minors, as stated by the local government. A demographic breakdown of the cases reveals that 58% are school-age children aged 5 to 17, while 44% are children between 1 and 10 years old.
Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: "Our declaration of a dengue outbreak ensures that we are on top of the situation, and we are doing everything we can to protect our residents from this deadly disease, especially our children."
In response to the outbreak, all 66 health centers in Quezon City will open this weekend, operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, to cater to potential dengue cases. Additionally, fever express lanes have been set up in all health centers and hospitals to quickly manage patients showing symptoms of dengue, which includes fever. Free dengue test kits are also being distributed to aid in early detection and treatment.
This outbreak underscores the severe public health challenge posed by dengue in the region, as authorities ramp up efforts to control the spread of the mosquito-borne virus. (ILKHA)
