Powerful 6.0 earthquake rocks Aegean Sea, felt in Türkiye and Egypt

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea early Thursday at 06:19 local time, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The quake, centered 55 kilometers north of a Greek island at a depth of 37 kilometers, was felt across coastal regions of Türkiye and Egypt.
No immediate casualties or major structural damage were reported, but emergency monitoring systems in Türkiye and Greece were swiftly activated. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with emergency services on standby.
Seismologists highlight the Aegean’s seismic activity due to the intersection of the African and Anatolian tectonic plates.
Residents in coastal areas are urged to stay vigilant as authorities warn of potential aftershocks. (ILKHA)
