Türkiye eases trade regulations with Syria, paving way for stronger economic ties

Türkiye has introduced new trade regulations with Syria, replacing older, restrictive measures linked to the previous Syrian regime.
The Turkish Trade Ministry announced the changes on Tuesday, marking a fresh phase of economic collaboration between the two neighboring countries.
The revised regulation, dated February 8, removes existing restrictions on exports, transit shipments, and imports between Türkiye and Syria, aligning trade conditions with those applied to other nations. According to the ministry’s statement, these changes are expected to facilitate smoother cross-border commerce and foster a more integrated trade environment.
Under the new framework, previous limitations on exports and transit shipments through the Turkish Customs Zone have been lifted. Goods transported from Türkiye to Syria will now be managed under standard trade conditions, ensuring efficiency and transparency in transactions.
Additionally, transit procedures for items leaving Syria for third countries have been liberalized, with the exception of scrap metal. This adjustment is aimed at streamlining the movement of goods, thereby supporting regional trade and economic stability.
Imports from Syria have also been normalized under the updated rules. Previously, certain imported items required special permissions, but these restrictions have now been removed. Products imported from Syria will now be subject to the same customs duties, safety inspections, and regulatory standards as goods from other nations, ensuring a level playing field for businesses.
The Turkish Trade Ministry emphasized that the new regulations align with Türkiye’s broader strategy of fostering economic cooperation with Syria amid ongoing political transitions in Damascus. The reforms come as part of a roadmap agreed upon by both governments in December, aimed at facilitating Syria’s gradual reintegration into the regional economy.
"The roadmap created by our government in line with the agreement reached with Syria regarding the new period is being implemented step by step," the ministry stated, underscoring its commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties.
The updated trade regulations are expected to boost commercial exchanges between the two countries and contribute to regional economic stability, as Türkiye continues to support Syria’s transition toward a more open market system. (ILKHA)
