68 suspects detained in overnight operation in Washington D.C.

A large-scale law enforcement operation in Washington D.C., has resulted in the arrest of 68 individuals, authorities confirmed Monday.
The crackdown, carried out overnight, involved coordinated efforts between federal agents and the Metropolitan Police Department.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi shared the results of the operation on social media platform X, highlighting that the arrests targeted murder suspects, drug traffickers, and other individuals involved in criminal activities. Some of those apprehended had previously been on federal wanted lists.
During the operation, which involved over 300 detentions in a single night, law enforcement officials also seized 15 illegal firearms and opened multiple criminal cases against the suspects.
“This large-scale operation is a critical step to ensure the safety of the residents of Washington, D.C.,” Bondi stated. “In collaboration with our federal partners, we have taken decisive action against dangerous criminals and those who threaten public safety.”
The initiative comes after U.S. President Donald Trump declared a public safety emergency in Washington on August 11. Under the emergency measures, the Washington Police Department was placed under federal oversight, and the National Guard was called in to support security efforts.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed Terry Cole, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as Emergency Police Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Department to lead enforcement and oversight during the heightened security period.
Officials emphasized that the operation was part of broader efforts to reduce crime in the capital and restore public confidence in law enforcement. Investigations and legal proceedings against those arrested are ongoing. (ILKHA)
