Afghan police burn over 7 tons of illicit opium in Takhar

Authorities in northern Afghanistan have publicly destroyed more than 7 tons of opium poppy-derived narcotics, following a major seizure in Takhar province, local officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Nizamudin Omir, spokesperson for the provincial police, the contraband—7.245 tons in total—was intercepted over the past three weeks as it was being smuggled out of Takhar. The drugs had been concealed in three vehicles, including two disguised as fuel tankers, in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
“This was a well-organized smuggling attempt, and we successfully thwarted it before the drugs could leave the province,” Omir said. “The seized opium was publicly set on fire on Monday, in full view of the local community, as a clear message that we will not tolerate drug trafficking in any form.”
The public destruction of the narcotics underscores the continued efforts by Afghan law enforcement to combat the cultivation and trafficking of opium poppy—a challenge that has long plagued the region and fueled illicit networks.
This marks the third major drug seizure by Takhar police in the past month. Earlier operations resulted in the confiscation and incineration of over 12 tons of illegal drugs, also predominantly composed of opium poppy products.
The recent crackdown highlights a renewed push by local authorities to enforce Afghanistan’s ban on narcotics production and trade. The Taliban-led government, which has officially prohibited opium cultivation and trade, has declared narcotics a threat to both Afghan society and international peace.
Police officials reiterated their commitment to enforcing anti-drug laws and dismantling trafficking networks across the country.
“Our message is clear,” Omir said. “No one will be allowed to produce, transport, or sell illegal drugs in Takhar or elsewhere in Afghanistan.” (ILKHA)
