Afghanistan and US discuss economic cooperation, prisoner swap in Kabul talks

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan continues its proactive engagement with the international community as Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, held important talks with Adam Bueller, the US Special Representative for Prisoners, in Kabul on Saturday.
The meeting — also attended by Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, former US envoy for Afghanistan peace — focused on strengthening political and economic ties between Afghanistan and the United States.
Mullah Baradar proudly highlighted the achievements of the Islamic Emirate, noting that corruption and narcotics cultivation have been completely eradicated, unemployment has significantly declined, and the Afghan currency remains strong against foreign currencies. He emphasized that Afghanistan’s banking sector is improving, exports are rising, and major infrastructure projects are underway, laying the foundation for long-term stability and prosperity.
He further stressed the government’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly climate, citing new laws, an inter-ministerial investment committee, and a comprehensive five-year national development strategy to encourage both domestic and foreign investment. Mullah Baradar urged the United States to abandon confrontational policies and instead contribute positively to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and economic development.
Bueller acknowledged these efforts and expressed Washington’s willingness to support Afghanistan’s economic recovery through private-sector partnerships. The talks also addressed humanitarian concerns, with Bueller proposing a prisoner exchange, a step that could build mutual confidence between Kabul and Washington.
Analysts see the meeting as a sign of the Islamic Emirate’s growing diplomatic maturity and its readiness to work with international partners to ensure peace, stability, and economic progress for the Afghan people. (ILKHA)
