Afghanistan, Uzbekistan hold high-level talks on expanding energy cooperation

Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, CEO of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), held a video conference with Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamuhammadov, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation on electricity and energy infrastructure.
During the virtual meeting, Dr. Omar underscored the longstanding ties between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, describing the two nations as “neighboring and friendly countries” whose mutual interests could be advanced through deeper economic cooperation.
He stressed that joint efforts in the energy sector could serve as a cornerstone for broader economic development, highlighting the potential for long-term strategic partnership between Kabul and Tashkent.
Uzbekistan’s Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamuhammadov echoed the sentiment, expressing strong support for expanding collaboration with Afghanistan. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to regional cooperation and emphasized Uzbekistan’s readiness to work closely with Afghan counterparts to meet shared energy goals.
The meeting led to progress on a number of key electricity-related issues, with both sides moving closer to formalizing agreements expected to be finalized in the near future.
Afghanistan currently imports electricity from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran, reflecting the country's dependence on regional power supply to meet domestic demand. Strengthening energy ties with Uzbekistan is seen as vital to ensuring Afghanistan’s energy security and supporting its economic recovery.
DABS officials said the engagement signals a positive step toward reliable power access for Afghan citizens, as well as enhanced economic integration with Central Asia. (ILKHA)
