Armenian PM confident in future normalization with Türkiye

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has voiced confidence that the long-closed border between Armenia and Türkiye will eventually be opened, highlighting ongoing direct negotiations with Ankara as part of broader regional efforts.
Speaking to journalists after a government session, Pashinyan said that regional programs currently under discussion could significantly influence the normalization process. “The declaration was signed by the US President as a witness. This is very important,” he noted, underscoring the role of international actors in the dialogue.
The prime minister suggested that Armenia could achieve greater regional connectivity even before the border is formally opened. “As for whether Armenia will be unblocked without the opening of the Turkish border, this can happen in at least several directions,” he explained.
Nevertheless, Pashinyan stressed his belief in eventual progress. “I hope and am sure that at some point the Armenia-Türkiye border will also be opened,” he said.
On the subject of travel, Pashinyan referred to the principle of reciprocity, particularly regarding the movement of citizens across borders. “Yes, in peacetime, everyone can go anywhere as a tourist,” he added, suggesting that mutual arrangements would govern such exchanges once relations normalize.
Armenia and Türkiye have no diplomatic ties and their shared border has remained closed since 1993, following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. While several past attempts at normalization have faltered, recent talks have revived cautious optimism that the two neighbors may be moving closer toward reconciliation and regional integration.
