Two children hear again: Diyarbakır hospital performs life-changing cochlear implants

Two children with severe hearing impairments underwent successful cochlear implant surgeries, also known as “bionic ear” procedures, at Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital in Diyarbakır.
The operations, performed by ear, nose, and throat specialists Dr. Enes Sırma and Dr. Müslüm Ayral, aim to restore the children’s ability to hear, offering them a new opportunity to engage with the world around them.
The cochlear implants, advanced devices designed to bypass damaged portions of the inner ear, work by directly stimulating the auditory nerve to transmit sound. This cutting-edge technology is a critical intervention for patients with profound hearing loss, for whom traditional hearing aids are ineffective.
“Our goal is to give these children the gift of sound,” said Dr. Sırma. “This surgery can transform their lives, enabling them to develop speech and participate fully in education and social activities.”
Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital remains the only public medical facility in Diyarbakır equipped to perform cochlear implant surgeries, a testament to its role as a regional leader in specialized care.
Hospital officials underscored the broader impact of the procedure, noting that it not only alleviates the challenges of hearing loss but also enhances patients’ quality of life by fostering greater involvement in their communities. “This is about more than hearing—it’s about connection and opportunity,” said Dr. Ayral.
The successful surgeries have brought hope to the children’s families, who expressed deep gratitude to the medical team for their expertise and care. The hospital will continue to support the young patients through rehabilitation to ensure optimal outcomes from the implants.
As the only public institution in Diyarbakır offering this life-changing procedure, Gazi Yaşargil Hospital continues to pave the way for advanced healthcare in Turkey’s southeastern region, giving children with hearing impairments a chance to experience the world of sound. (ILKHA)
