Bus plunges into valley in Algiers, leaving 18 dead and 9 injured

At least 18 people were killed and nine others injured, two of them critically, when a passenger bus plunged into a valley in the Algerian capital on Friday, authorities confirmed.
The accident occurred in the El Harrach district of Algiers when the bus veered off the road and slid into the Oued El Harrach late in the afternoon, according to the Civil Protection Department.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where search and rescue operations were launched immediately. Teams worked to recover the bodies of the victims and transfer the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Civil Protection teams said recovery efforts were ongoing late Friday evening as investigators began examining the circumstances of the accident.
Road accidents remain a recurring tragedy in Algeria, where poor road conditions, speeding, and mechanical failures often contribute to deadly incidents. The El Harrach crash is among the deadliest in recent months, renewing concerns over road safety in the capital. (ILKHA)
