A Colombian Air Force plane touched down in Bogota on Wednesday morning, carrying 105 Colombian nationals deported from the United States, marking the third deportation flight this week, according to the Colombian Foreign Ministry.
"Deportees arrived in the morning from San Diego, California," the ministry stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Colombians abroad. This follows two prior flights on Tuesday that brought back 201 nationals, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The deportations come after a diplomatic standoff where Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially refused to allow US military planes carrying handcuffed deportees to land on January 26. This led to a high-level bilateral meeting in Washington, culminating in an agreement for the respectful and safe return of Colombian citizens, the ministry confirmed.
Astrid Caceres, director of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare, has initiated an investigation into the treatment of these deportees, describing it as "degrading." She highlighted complaints from children who reported being handcuffed and forced to bathe in cold water at 3 a.m. by US officials. (ILKHA)
