Daniel Noboa wins Ecuador’s presidential election

Conservative candidate Daniel Noboa has been projected as the winner of Ecuador’s presidential election, with preliminary results from the National Electoral Council (CNE) showing an “irreversible” lead.
With 90% of votes counted, Noboa’s victory was announced Sunday night, marking a significant moment for the nation grappling with drug-related violence and an energy crisis.
CNE President Diana Atamaint confirmed Noboa’s win in a press conference, highlighting the historic nature of the election. Speaking to supporters in Olón, Noboa celebrated what he called a “historic victory” by over a million votes, promising a “New Ecuador” focused on economic revival and a tough stance on organized crime.
However, leftist candidate Luisa González, aligned with former president Rafael Correa, rejected the results and demanded a recount. Addressing supporters in Quito, González vowed to challenge the outcome, citing concerns over transparency and accusing the process of favoring “lies” and “violence” over unity. This marks the second electoral clash between Noboa and González, following Noboa’s win in the 2023 snap election.
As the final vote count continues, Ecuador faces potential political unrest, with calls for transparency intensifying in a deeply divided nation. (ILKHA)
