Russian citizen embraces Islam in Batman, takes name Meryem
In a heartfelt ceremony at the Batman Provincial Mufti’s Office, Russian citizen Natalia embraced Islam by reciting the Shahada, officially becoming a Muslim and adopting the name Meryem.
The event, marked by spiritual joy and unity, was attended by Provincial Mufti Ahmet Durmuş, who warmly welcomed Meryem into the faith and shared insights about the beauty and truth of Islam. The ceremony concluded with a collective prayer, celebrating Meryem’s new journey.
Meryem’s path to Islam began in Moscow, inspired by the exemplary worship and lifestyle of her husband, Halil Akgül, a devoted Muslim. Speaking to ILKHA, Akgül shared how his wife’s curiosity about Islam grew as she observed his prayers and fasting. “My wife was impressed by my actions and asked me to explain Islam,” Akgül said. “I shared the essence of our faith, and she began her own research. Through her studies, she discovered that Islam is the true path and expressed her desire to embrace it.”
Akgül emphasized the transformative power of living Islam authentically. “The more beautifully we live Islam, the closer we are to Allah, and the more meaningful our lives become,” he said. He encouraged others to explore Islam deeply, noting its profound impact on his wife’s decision. Meryem, formerly Natalia, chose her new name to reflect her commitment to her faith. After completing official paperwork at the Batman Mufti’s Office and visiting relatives in Turkey, the couple plans to return to Moscow, where Meryem will continue her journey as a Muslim.
Expressing gratitude, Meryem recited the Shahada with conviction, marking a new chapter in her spiritual life. Her story stands as a testament to Islam’s universal appeal and the power of a lived faith to inspire others toward the path of truth. (ILKHA)
