The accident happened when a minibus taxi collided with a truck on the R66 between Melmoth and Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Bheki Ntuli said.
According to reports, among the deceased there was a pregnant female who gave birth at the scene, the infant also died.
MEC Ntuli will visit the scene of the accident immediately after the media briefing on crime currently under way.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal government urged motorists to be extra cautious due to inclement weather and ongoing showers causing slippery and hazardous road conditions. (ILKHA)
