The death toll from rainstorms and flooding in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province has risen to 40, with 347 people reported injured, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday.
Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, spokesman for the ministry, confirmed that health workers have been dispatched to the affected areas to provide medical assistance, noting that the number of casualties may increase.
The natural disaster struck suddenly on Monday afternoon, causing significant fatalities and extensive financial damage in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, as well as Sukh Rod District and surrounding areas near the Pakistan border.
Meanwhile, in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, five people lost their lives due to flash floods that swept through the region on Monday morning.
