Death toll from floods increases to 19 in Indonesia

At least 19 people have died and 10 are missing in floods caused by days of heavy rain on Indonesia's Bali Island and in the East Nusa Tenggara province.
Gusti Ayu Ketut Wijayanti, spokesperson for the National Search and Rescue Agency's Bali office, said in a statement that flash floods had caused the deaths of 13 people on the island and left six others missing.
Additionally, 18 landslides were reported in various areas.
The country's Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency reported that up to 150 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in some parts of Bali between Tuesday and Wednesday and warned that heavy rainfall was expected to continue throughout the week.
Floods in East Nusa Tenggara province damaged homes and agricultural land, forcing residents to evacuate to higher ground.
Gasper Losa Manisa, Head of the Emergency Unit at the Provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, said that 6 more people had lost their lives in another flood disaster in the region, 4 people were missing, and rescue efforts were ongoing.
Indonesia's rainy season usually runs from November to April, a period prone to floods, landslides, and related diseases. However, climate change has prolonged the rainy season and intensified downpours in recent years, resulting in more severe disasters.(lLKHA)
