Dozens killed in Afghanistan-Pakistan border clashes, regional powers call for restraint

Intense clashes between forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and Pakistan along the Durand Line have left dozens dead, with both sides reporting casualties, while regional powers urged restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
Afghanistan claimed that 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed in overnight operations, while Pakistan confirmed 23 fatalities among its forces and reported dozens more injured. The fighting involved cross-border shelling, attacks on border posts, and territorial incursions. Afghan forces reportedly captured several Pakistani positions during the clashes.
In response to the escalation, Pakistan closed major border crossings, including Torkham and Chaman, affecting trade and civilian movement. Authorities warned that crossings would remain closed until tensions ease.
Qatar called on both countries to prioritize diplomacy and restraint, emphasizing dialogue to avoid escalation and maintain regional security. Saudi Arabia also urged calm, while Iran offered to assist in reducing tensions and promoting stability in the region.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan announced that, at the request of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, it had temporarily halted hostilities. However, spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid warned that any continued attacks by Pakistan would be met with an appropriate response.
Pakistani officials maintained that attacks originated from Afghan territory, targeting their forces and civilians. President Asif Ali Zardari stated that Pakistan is committed to defending its territory and national interests. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi described Afghan firing into Pakistan as a violation of international law.
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, currently in India, stressed national unity and warned that foreign interference would be met with a coordinated Afghan response. Political analyst Sayed Qaribullah Sadat highlighted the need for dialogue and reconciliation through diplomatic channels to avoid further regional instability.
The closure of border crossings has disrupted trade and civilian movement, raising concerns over economic and humanitarian consequences for border communities. Analysts warn that continued fighting could worsen the situation, potentially drawing in other regional actors.
Mediators, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, are actively involved in negotiations to maintain the ceasefire and bring both sides to the table. Verification of casualty claims and restoration of border operations remain central to ongoing diplomatic discussions.
The clashes mark one of the deadliest confrontations between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, highlighting the fragile security situation along the shared border. (ILKHA)
