EU to phase out Russian Gas completely by 2027 amid energy security push
The European Union has reached a landmark agreement to gradually end imports of Russian natural gas, marking a decisive step toward energy independence and signaling a major shift in the continent’s energy landscape.
The European Union has agreed on a comprehensive plan to fully end Russian gas imports by 2027, following negotiations between the European Council and the European Parliament. The phased plan targets both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline deliveries, with LNG imports expected to halt by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas ceasing by autumn 2027.
As of October 2025, Russia’s share in the EU gas market had fallen to around 12 percent, though countries such as Hungary, France, and Belgium continue to rely partially on Russian supplies. The decision reflects the bloc’s commitment to energy security, reducing reliance on Russian energy amid geopolitical tensions.
The agreement has been hailed as a significant milestone in the EU’s energy transition strategy. Officials emphasized that the phased withdrawal will allow member states to adapt infrastructure, diversify suppliers, and increase investments in renewable energy and alternative fuels.
The EU plans to support countries most dependent on Russian gas in managing the transition while encouraging a unified approach to external energy contracts. Analysts note that this move will reshape European gas markets and may influence global LNG trade patterns.
The phased cessation also underscores the EU’s broader efforts to achieve energy sovereignty and resilience, particularly as geopolitical instability continues to affect global energy flows. European leaders argue that ending dependence on Russian gas is not only an economic necessity but also a strategic imperative for long-term regional security.
The agreement has been reported internationally by major news outlets, highlighting its importance for energy markets and European policy. With this decision, the EU is taking a decisive step toward fully eliminating Russian gas imports and strengthening the continent’s energy independence. (ILKHA)
