Firefighting helicopter crashes amid Greece’s raging wildfires

A firefighting helicopter crashed into the sea on Tuesday while attempting to scoop up water to battle an intense wildfire near Athens. All three crew members were rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred as Greece continues to grapple with a surge in wildfires fueled by scorching summer temperatures, severe drought conditions, and strong winds. Authorities report that the fire risk across the country remains extremely high, with dozens of blazes already recorded this season.
A major wildfire erupted near the southern city of Corinth on Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of several villages as flames swept through pine forests in the mountainous terrain. Over 180 firefighters, backed by 15 aircraft and 12 helicopters, were mobilized to contain the blaze under grueling 40°C (104°F) heat.
Although no injuries were immediately reported from the fire zone, the challenging conditions have made containment efforts difficult. The Greek Fire Department said efforts were ongoing and being complicated by shifting winds and high fuel loads in the forested area.
The Greek government, anticipating a dangerous fire season, had earlier announced the deployment of a record number of firefighters and nearly doubled its drone surveillance fleet in preparation. Officials say these efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance early detection and rapid response capabilities in the face of climate-related risks.
Experts warn that the frequency and severity of wildfires in the region are being worsened by climate change, with prolonged droughts and rising summer temperatures becoming the norm.
The current crisis echoes memories of the deadly 2018 wildfire in Mati, east of Athens, which claimed the lives of more than 100 people. Many victims were trapped in their homes or died trying to flee by car or by sea.
As heatwaves intensify across the Mediterranean, Greek authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders promptly when issued. (ILKHA)
