The attack occurred at approximately 7 p.m., as the market was bustling with holiday shoppers preparing for the weekend. The driver was apprehended at the scene shortly after the car careened into the market.
A nearby police officer, with a handgun drawn, was seen shouting at the suspect, who was lying on a walkway. Additional officers arrived shortly after to secure the suspect.
Authorities confirmed the deaths of an adult and a toddler. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of further fatalities, as 15 of the injured individuals are in serious condition.
