Hamas releases Israeli-American soldier as ceasefire talks continue

Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), announced the release of Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, a dual US-Israeli citizen, on Monday evening at 6:30 PM.
The move, described as a step to facilitate a ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, underscores Hamas’s commitment to diplomacy despite Israel’s ongoing aggression, according to a statement from the group.
Hamas revealed that Alexander’s release followed constructive communications with the US administration, mediated by regional partners, aimed at securing a ceasefire, reopening border crossings, and ensuring the flow of desperately needed aid into the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian resistance group emphasized that its decision reflects a spirit of positivity and flexibility, contrasting sharply with what it called the “brutal war” waged by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against Palestinian civilians, including women and children.
“This step proves that serious and responsible negotiations can secure the release of prisoners,” Hamas stated, warning that Israel’s relentless military campaign only prolongs the suffering of captives and risks their lives. The group accused Israel of perpetuating a genocidal blockade and bombardment that has killed over 52,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, since October 2023, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
Hamas expressed its readiness to immediately engage in comprehensive talks for a sustainable ceasefire, demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, an end to the 18-year blockade, a prisoner exchange, and the reconstruction of the devastated enclave. The group called on the administration of US President Donald Trump to intensify efforts to halt Israel’s “criminal” offensive, which has left Gaza’s 2 million residents facing famine and a collapsing humanitarian situation, as warned by global hunger monitors and the United Nations.
The release of Alexander, who was captured during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, operation, comes amid heightened international pressure for a resolution to the conflict. Hamas urged the global community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and support Palestinian demands for justice, self-determination, and an end to the occupation. (ILKHA)
