Hind Rajab Foundation files ICC complaint against Israeli commanders for killing of Anas Al-Sharif

The Hind Rajab Foundation has taken a bold step in the international legal arena, filing a formal complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against six senior Israeli military commanders for their role in the killing of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, his colleague Mohammed Qreiqa, and other Palestinian journalists.
The complaint directly names Israel’s army Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar, and Southern Command Chief Major General Yaniv Asor among those responsible. The foundation stresses that these figures, along with other high-ranking military officials, orchestrated and oversaw the systematic targeting of journalists in Gaza.
At the political apex, the foundation pointed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — already wanted by the ICC for other war crimes charges — as the architect of the policy to silence Palestinian voices through lethal force. “Netanyahu has deliberately cultivated a military strategy in which journalists are viewed as legitimate targets, in an effort to blind the world to Israel’s atrocities in Gaza,” the statement read.
The latest crime occurred on Sunday evening, when an Israeli airstrike struck Al Jazeera’s crew tent near the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, killing Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqa. Their deaths brought the number of journalists killed during Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza to 236 — a staggering figure that underscores the systematic nature of the targeting.
The Hind Rajab Foundation, headquartered in Brussels and established in February 2024, is named after a five-year-old Palestinian girl whose name has become a symbol of innocence lost. Hind was killed alongside six family members when their car was obliterated by Israeli fire in southwestern Gaza City on January 29, 2024, after she had pleaded for help in a desperate phone call that went viral across the world.
Since its creation, the foundation has been committed to pursuing Israeli political and military leaders in courts around the globe, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity. This latest ICC filing is part of its broader strategy to ensure that those responsible for Palestinian bloodshed — whether in uniform or in government — face justice.
In Gaza, the killing of Anas Al-Sharif, known for his fearless frontline reporting on Israel’s massacres, has deepened the sense of loss in a besieged land already drowning in grief. His death, alongside countless other Palestinian journalists, has reaffirmed the urgent call from press freedom advocates and human rights organizations for the international community to end its silence and hold Israel accountable.
The Hind Rajab Foundation’s move sends a clear message: the killing of Palestinian journalists will not be erased from history, nor will it go unpunished. (ILKHA)
