Authorities in Kerala, southern India, have implemented a mandatory mask mandate in Malappuram district following the death of a 23-year-old student from the Nipah virus.
The young man, a resident of Chembaram, succumbed to the infection last week after developing a fever and experiencing respiratory symptoms. The virus was confirmed by laboratory tests at Kozhikode Medical College and Pune virology lab.
In response to the outbreak, local officials have imposed strict protocols in the affected area, including the closure of schools, theaters, and public gatherings. Authorities are also mapping the deceased's contacts to identify potential cases and implement necessary precautions.
The Nipah virus, which is spread by fruit bats, has caused multiple outbreaks in India and other Asian countries. While there is no vaccine available, the disease is fatal in 70% of cases. To prevent further transmission, authorities are urging people to avoid consuming fruits that appear damaged or bitten and to refrain from picking up fruit from the ground. (ILKHA)
